Signature Strengths – The Concept

The Values in Action Inventory of Strengths (VIA-IS) is a psychological assessment measure designed to identify an individual’s profile of character strengths. It was created by Christopher Peterson and Martin Seligman, well-known researchers in the field of Positive Psychology. The VIA-IS is centered on helping people recognize and build upon their strengths. This aligned with the overall goal of the Positive Psychology movement, which aims to make people’s lives more fulfilling. Notably, the VIA-IS is the tool by which people can identify their own positive strengths and learn how to capitalize on them

Positive Psychology is a recent branch of psychology whose purpose was summed up in 1998 by Martin Seligman and Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi: “We believe that a psychology of positive human functioning will arise, which achieves a scientific understanding and effective interventions to build thriving individuals, families, and communities.” Positive psychologists seek “to find and nurture genius and talent” and to make normal life more fulfilling”
